Drivers (Portrait of America)

Over ten years Scherloum traveled with strangers in their cars.  She documented these sometimes long trips, from Berkeley to Minneapolis, or New Orleans to Oakland, and sometimes short trips, hopping from car to car along the Rocky Mountain towns of I70, with photographs and stories shared with the drivers who picked her up.  Sometimes boring, sometimes uncomfortable, these interactions were overwhelmingly positive, and revealed a sense of longing inside the cars as if travel requried a state of isolation, as if it was entered and exited through onramps and offramps.
